Deep crustal heating for realistic compositions of thermonuclear ashes

چکیده

The deep crustal heating, associated with exothermal nuclear reactions, is believed to be a key parameter for describing the thermal evolution of accreting neutron stars. In this paper, we present first thermodynamically consistent calculations heating realistic compositions thermonuclear ashes. contrast previous studies based on traditional approach, account hydrostatic/diffusion (nHD) equilibrium condition imposed by superfluidity neutrons in major part inner crust and rapid diffusion remaining crust. We apply simplified reaction network model various multi-component burning ashes (superburst, KEPLER, extreme rp-process ashes) outer calculate energy release Q, parametrized pressure at outer-inner interface, P_{oi}. Using general thermodynamic arguments, set lower limit Q>0.13-0.2 MeV per baryon (an actual value depends ash composition employed mass model).

Stars as thermonuclear reactors: their fuels and ashes 1

Atomic nuclei are transformed into each other in the cosmos by nuclear reactions inside stars: – the process of nucleosynthesis. The basic concepts of determining nuclear reaction rates inside stars and how they manage to burn their fuel so slowly most of the time are discussed. Thermonuclear reactions involving protons in the hydrostatic burning of hydrogen in stars are discussed first. This i...

Consistency between deep crustal heating of strange stars in superbursters and soft X-ray transients

Context. Both superbursters and soft X-ray transients probe the process of deep crustal heating in compact stars. It was recently shown that the transfer of matter from crust to core in a strange star can heat the crust and ignite superbursts provided certain constraints on the strange quark matter equation of state are fulfilled. Aims. We derive corresponding constraints on the equation of sta...

Time-Variable Emission from Transiently Accreting Neutron Stars In Quiescence due to Deep Crustal Heating

Transiently accreting neutron stars in quiescence (LX ∼ <10 erg s) have been observed to vary in intensity by factors of few, over timescales of days to years. If the quiescent luminosity is powered by a hot NS core, the core cooling timescale is much longer than the recurrence time, and cannot explain the observed, more rapid variability. However, the non-equilibrium reactions which occur in t...

Effects of Defining Realistic Compositions of the Ocular Melanoma on Proton Therapy

Background: Recent studies in eye plaque brachytherapy have shown a considerable difference between the dosimetric results using water phantom and a model of human eye containing realistic materials. In spite of this fact, there is a lack of simulation studies based on such a model in proton therapy literatures. In the presented work, the effect of utilizing an eye model with ocular media on pr...

Models of crustal heating in accreting neutron stars

Aims. Heating associated with non-equilibrium nuclear reactions in accreting neutron-star crusts is reconsidered, taking into account suppression of neutrino losses demonstrated recently by Gupta et al. Two initial compositions of the nuclear burning ashes, Ai = 56 and Ai = 106, are considered. Dependence of the integrated crustal heating on uncertainties plaguing pycnonuclear reaction models i...
